If someone told you to meet at “five-o-clock” you might ask if that is in the morning or evening. With military time, they would have told you “Zero Five Hundred Hours” or “Seventeen Hundred Hours” which would clear up the confusion. In order to have your military time credited, you must complete several steps to account for the time you served. And if you want your military time to count toward a FERS or CSRS pension, it’s important to take action now. The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure that buying back your time makes sense. In general, the best way to find out if a buy back makes sense, is to estimate the cost of your service deposit, and then find out how much will be added to your pension at retirement. You can easily get both pieces of information using the calculator above. Military time is a means of keeping, recording, and expressing time that’s based on the 24-hour format. The 24-hour cycle used in military time removes the need to use suffixes such as “AM” and “PM,” and thus makes time expression brief and unambiguous. For most people, it can be difficult to memorize and use the military time chart. One of the best ways to learn is just by making a clock and practicing telling time. After a few repetitions, it will become easy, and hopefully, even second nature. Many veterans today only use a watch with military time. Use the military time converter to quickly convert standard time to military time and vice versa. If you look at our list of military time zones, you will notice that the letter J is missing. J Time, or Juliet Time, does not refer to a particular time zone but can be used to denote the local time of the person stating the time. If you don’t have access to our calculator, you can also use a military time chart. This chart makes it easy to convert time from one format to the other.
